Grounding semantic transparency in context

چکیده

Abstract We present the results of a large-scale corpus-based comparison two German event nominalization patterns: deverbal nouns in -ung (e.g., die Evaluierung , ‘the evaluation’) and nominal infinitives das Evaluieren evaluating’). Among many available patterns for German, we selected these because they are both highly productive challenging from semantic point view. Both known to keep tight relation with denoted by base verb, but different nuances. Our study targets better understanding differences their import. The key notion our is that transparency, propose usage-based characterization relationship between derived nominals bases. Using methods distributional semantics, bring bear concrete measures transparency which highlight nuances: first one, cosine detects nominalizations semantically similar bases; second inclusion used subset contexts verb. find only measure helps characterizing difference types nominalizations, traditionally considered variable relative frequency (Hay, 2001). Finally, analysis allows us frame broader coordinates inflection vs. derivation cline.

Grounding language models in spatiotemporal context

Natural language is rich and varied, but also highly structured. The rules of grammar are a primary source of linguistic regularity, but there are many other factors that govern patterns of language use. Language models attempt to capture linguistic regularities, typically by modeling the statistics of word use, thereby folding in some aspects of grammar and style. Spoken language is an importa...

Conjunction errors and semantic transparency.

Memory conjunction errors occur when aspects of two different events are falsely recognized or recalled as having occurred as parts of the same event. One theoretical account of conjunction errors is rooted in traditional dual-process models of recognition judgments, in which responses are based on an item's familiarity or the retrieval of recollected details associated with the encoding of tha...

Context-Awareness and Context-Transparency as Orthogonal Concepts in HCI

There is no free ride in enhancing context-awareness of artifacts as artifacts lack the ability to (re-) negotiate the meaning of particular situations. We therefore argue that research in context-awareness should be complemented by orthogonal research in what we call context-transparency.

Modelling semantic transparency in English compound nouns

Semantic transparency is known to play an important role in the storage and processing of complex words (e.g. Marslen-Wilson et al. 1994), and human raters of transparency achieve high levels of agreement (e.g. Frisson et al. 2008, Munro et al. 2010). In the case of noun-noun compounds, overall transparency is largely determined by the transparency of the individual constituents. For example, R...
